OH-IRI ETO-DAKO

The Japanese letter
"OH-IRI"
with
a picture of dragon.

"Oh" means "Big"
"Iri" means "in"
"Eto" means "a year of birth"
"Dako" means "Kite".

From olden times in Japan we have a custom called "OH-IRI BUKURO", the name for a special washi-paper bag. Workers, in a theatre for example, would get a full-house bonus, given to them in an "oh-iri bukuro", (so it is a symbol of very good luck). We can still buy these small bags in Japan, but there are fewer opportunities for people to get the "oh-iri bukuro" outside of the traditional KABUKI, SUMO and the NOH. The background design of this kite is the shape of the "OH-IRI BUKURO".
