Suruga Kite - expert

This kite is a terrific flyer and exciting to make!

Materials

MATERIALS:
Ripstop nylon or equivalent
Bamboo or wood dowels Ð 1/8Ó Ð 2 @ 36Ó
Tape (cloth) and double stick tape
String (packaging type) 30'
Hobby stick

TOOLS:
Scissors
Ruler (yardstick)
Pencil/pen
Magic markers (permanent type)
Toothpicks (3 pieces)

REMEMBER THAT IT'S IMPORTANT TO ALWAYS WORK UNDER ADULT SUPERVISION. SOMETIMES WE USE THINGS THAT CAN BE HARMFUL, LIKE SCISSORS, SO DON'T EVER ATTEMPT TO MAKE THESE PROJECTS ALONE.

Instructions

  1. Lay R-S-N flat and draw lines to cut out sail. Do art decoration now.
  2. Cut 1 stick 9 1/4Ó long for placing across narrow side (top) Put double stick tape across top edge and place stick across top. Put another layer of double stick on stick and fold again. Stick will be longer than sail Ð 1/2Ó each side.
  3. Cut stick 14 1/2Ó long and place in center (top to bottom) tape into position on ends overlapping to front side of sail.
  4. Cut 2 sticks 16 1/4Ó and place with top extending 1/2Ó and flush on bottom. Tape bottom to sail overlapping tape on front of sail. Tie top ends to horizontal stick with string.
  5. Tie 3 sticks together at crossing location. Cut 30Ó string for bridle and attach on each top corner.
  6. Cut 30Ó string and attach with larks head knot to top bridle. Attach other end 4Ó up from bottom on center stick.
  7. Cut 8Ó string Ð make adjustable bridle loop and larks head onto lower bridle leg. Make tails with plastic strips, ribbon or macramŽ cord.
  8. Cut 25Õ or more of string and wind on hobby stick. Attach to adjustable bridle loop. Adjust bridle Ð hang kite by fly line Ð bottom of kite must by slightly lower than top. Adjust to wind speed.
